There are very few fluent native language speakers left in indigenous communities in the U.S. because of the early efforts to stamp out those languages.
Generations of Native American children were taken from their homes and placed into boarding schools where they were not allowed to speak their native tongue, their hair was cut, and they could only wear European style clothes. The mantra back then was, “Kill the Indian, Save the Man”. The thought was that if they wipe out the culture of the natives by assimilation, then they could have a cheap and passive workforce. Such was the thinking then, and still persists in one form or another today. But, here is where we talk about how we take back, and have taken back our culture, our language, and our beliefs.
